About Me

The first line of my website is a quotation from the Lord of the Rings movie trilogy. It's advice the wizard Gandalf gives Frodo when they learn Frodo will have to carry the ring of power all the way to the lands of Mordor. Frodo, holding the ring, says he wishes that he would have never possessed it. But Gandalf says to him, "So do I, and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for us to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us."

As most of you know, Frodo goes through that dangerous journey, even at a great personal cost (and as most of you know now, I really like those LOTR movies).

Despite my many moves over the last couple of years, I haven't forgotten that story. The truth of Gandalf's statement has kept bothering me - I do only have a short time to make a difference in this world and though I thoroughly enjoyed my life out east, I knew my life wasn't just there.  I needed to do something about abortion.

I became active in pro-life work in grade eight after Mr. Roseman made us do debates on controversial social issues. We picked subjects out of a hat and I was to debate abortion - for the pro-abortion side! I was already pro-life but that debate gave me a chance to really research the issue.

After high school, I decided to go to Ottawa to get into journalism because I felt reporters didn't cover the abortion debate fairly and I hoped to at least be fair. But at university, I helped start Ottawa Youth for Life, a pro-life group for students. Through that group, I met other young pro-lifers keen on ending abortion as a full time career. I knew this is where I wanted to be and that's how I helped start the the group I work for.

Most of you reading this probably sympathise, though some of you who know me probably don't. That's okay. I believe even good friends can disagree on difficult issues and still be good friends.

The one characteristic I hope that all of you see in me is that I take the actions I do because of God's love. I didn't get into this work thinking I know everything or that I'm better than anyone else but simply because God loves me and loves other people. It's that love, love that was shown by His own sacrifice on the cross, that changed and is changing me. It's God's love that motivates me now to take the stands I do, even if they are difficult or unpopular.

And if there's anything that you remember about me, I hope it's that simple but profound truth that the God who made this whole universe loves people and is willing to show His love through people, even someone as weak and fallible as I am.

Blessings to you,
Jojo Ruba
